Arizona State University - Graduate

Phoenix, AZ

Arizona State University (ASU) has developed a new model for the American university, creating an institution that is committed to excellence, access and impact. ASU pursues research that contributes to the public good; and ASU assumes major responsibility for the economic, social and cultural vitality of the communities that surround it. ASU is a model American university for preparing students to be the entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial thought leaders of the future.

By breaking down traditional barriers and bringing diverse perspectives to bear on local and global challenges, ASU students of all disciplines are empowered to be entrepreneurs and think entrepreneurially. ASU faculty and students identify local and global needs, articulate how to meet them and move forward with implementing innovative solutions, regardless of whether they are pursuing, for instance, business, social work, or the arts.

Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiatve.
Through the Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative, students are awarded with grants ranging from $1,000 to $20,000. Edson winners are also provided with office space, training and mentoring. To date, over $1 million has been awarded to student teams with innovative venture ideas that focus on everything from K-12 education reform to disaster housing to cardiac arrest response.

The Venture Catalyst. Students interested in speaking with a professional about making their ideas happen can utilize the services of ASU’s Venture Catalyst. The Venture Catalyst provides a suite of venture acceleration services that are designed to help ventures, in all stages of development, grow and succeed. Some of these services include legal counsel, startup assessments, startup boot camps, mentoring opportunities, workshops and office hours.

Classes, Certificates and Degrees. Over 10,000 students enroll in ASU entrepreneurship classes each year. ASU offers over 90 entrepreneurship courses and a wide variety of degrees and certificates. Students of all majors and interests are encouraged to enroll.

Internships.
Students who are eager to learn from local entrepreneurs can intern with them to gain experience through the Sun Devil Entrepreneurship Network (SDEN). SDEN interns come from all majors and interests and learn through working closely with professionals and entrepreneurs.

Hackspace.
Students can find free co-working and collaborative workspace at Hackspace. Hackspace, located at SkySong, the Scottsdale Innovation Center, provides open space for students with common interests to meet, socialize, work and/or collaborate.

Legal Support and Clinic Opportunities.
The Innovation Advancement Program (IAP) and the Lisa Foundation Patent Law Clinic are housed in the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. Students seeking legal advice for their ventures can receive support from either of these resources. The Innovation Advancement Program provides students with legal and consulting services, while the Lisa Foundation Patent Law Clinic provides student entrepreneurs with patent prosecution, licensing and litigation services. Both programs allow graduate students to practice and refine their legal skills, while providing invaluable service to student entrepreneurs.

Over 90 entrepreneurship courses are offered at ASU. See below for a list of some of our most popular offerings.

Digital Media Entrepreneurship

MCO 598: Digital Media Entrepreneurship
MGT 594: Digital Media Entrepreneurship

Students enrolled in Digital Media Entrepreneurship in the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication become familiar with the latest developments on the digital media landscape while learning the essential principles of entrepreneurship necessary for them to forge their own sustainable niche within it.

The course is a part of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship and has its own lab and office space in the digital media wing of the Cronkite School’s new state-of-the-art complex in downtown Phoenix. It adjoins the New Media Innovation Lab, a research and development institute established in 2006 that works with major media companies on digital product development.

GlobalResolve
IND 494: Global Resolve: Product Design for the Developing World
SOS 494: Global Resolve: Product Design for the Developing World

Through GlobalResolve, ASU students and faculty collaborate with international universities, residents of rural villages, local governments, financial institutions, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to develop and disseminate no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech solutions that address pressing public health or environmental needs of a developing-world population.

Because solutions developed by GlobalResolve are designed to be replicable locally, regionally, and internationally, the solutions also create the potential for profitable new business ventures that generate sustainable income streams for impacted populations. Past successful ventures to launch from GlobalResolve include Daylight Solutions, which created the Aura Light, a device that uses the waste heat from cooking embers to create electricity.

Open to undergraduates and graduate students of all disciplines.

Students are embedded with social enterprises in the Phoenix area to help develop and implement social innovation projects.
